The invention relates to the use of oil-in-water emulsions as additives for accelerating anaerobic processes and/or for increasing the degree of degradation of the same. Hydrocarbons, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, fatty acid monoalkylesters, fatty amides, fatty acid monoalkylamides, mono- or polyesters, polyamides, terpenes and/or polyoxyalkylene compounds can be used as a constituent of the oily phase.
