<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a development device capable of obtaining an image of satisfactory quality by suppressing maldistribution in an axial direction of a developer and, more particularly suppressing image density unevenness in the axial direction even when the development device inclines. <P>SOLUTION: The development device has a developer carrier 32, a developer container 33, a toner container 35, a developer retreating section 34, and a developer separating means for separating the excess developer in the developer container or the developer retreating section according to toner density by damming up part of a two-component developer as an excess developer, wherein the two component developer G introduced into the developer retreating section 34 according to the toner density in the developer container 33 flows into the developer container 33 while capturing the toner T replenished from the toner container 35.
