<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate exposure (luminance) adjustment work while viewing the luminance distribution of a pick-up image in an electronic still camera etc., and also to improve the visibility of the luminance distribution of the pick-up image. <P>SOLUTION: When an EV value is shifted (YES in SA 2), a luminance level is counted for every pixel from the pick-up image (SA 6), and the display data of the histogram of the luminance distribution is generated (SA 7). Unless the EV value is at an upper limit or lower limit of the adjustment range (NO in SA 8), the display color is compounded as white to a through-image (SA 9), and the through-image superposed with the white histogram is displayed (SA 11). If the EV value is at the upper limit or lower limit of the adjustment range (YES in SA 8), the display color is compounded as red to the through-image (SA 10), and the through-image superposed with the red histogram is displayed (SA 11).
