<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar lighting device with increased degree of freedom of leading wiring to a point light source and very convenient for promoting downsizing and thinning of a product to be applied. <P>SOLUTION: Light emitting diodes 15 are disposed in a pair of recessed part 14e, 14e formed in one end surface of a light guide plate 14 respectively. The light emitting diodes 15 and their protection elements 16 are transparently formed using a transparent electrical conducting material and electrically connected with the wiring 17 directly arranged in the light guide plate 14 to form a prescribed circuit.
