PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide mechanical scanning type ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus which can enhance the degree of freedom of scanning density of an ultrasonic beam, while maintaining the conventional property that the fluctuation and distortion of an ultrasonic-tomographic image are prevented, even if a rotational motion of an ultrasonic transducer fluctuates in speed to a certain extent. SOLUTION: This ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus is equipped with the ultrasonic transducer 1, a rotary drive means 3, a rotation control means 4, a rotary encoder 2 which generates a pulse depending on an angle of rotation of the ultrasonic transducer, an ultrasonic transmission means 8 for bringing about the excitation of the ultrasonic transducer, and a reception and detection means 5. The ultrasonic transmission means brings about the excitation of the ultrasonic transducer, in accordance with timing based on the pulse generated by the rotary encoder. The ultrasonic diagnostic equipment has a transmission timing determining means 7 which measures a plurality of pulse periods of a predetermined number of pulses, obtained from the rotary encoder, and which determines timing when the plurality of pulse periods are split into a predetermined number of periods. The ultrasonic transmission means brings about the excitation of the ultrasonic transducer with the timing which is determined by the transmission timing determining means.
