PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor element which has a saturable light absorption characteristic with reduced driving optical power even when taking on a bulky thin film shape, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The semiconductor element has a semiconductor thin film exhibiting a saturable absorption characteristic, and has a pressurizing means to press the semiconductor thin film. It is anticipated that a warp is imparted to a crystal structure existing in the semiconductor thin film by pressing the semiconductor thin film exhibiting the saturable absorption characteristic, and saturation excitation light intensity density Is is varied according to the warp.
