PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focusing drive unit for switching between AF (automatic focusing) and MF (manual focusing) by the turning on/off of a clutch, in which the clutch is automatically turned off to make the MF effective when a focus lens is greatly out of focus and the AF is impossible, and the clutch is automatically turned on to make a focus adjustment by the AF when the AF is possible, thereby eliminating the need for switching between the AF and the MF. SOLUTION: A CPU 10 acquires a focal point evaluation value from an AF processing section 12 by minutely vibrating a wobbling lens WL. When a focused state or the direction of focusing is detected as a result of this, the clutch FC is turned on and the focus lens FL is controlled by the AF. On the other hand, when the focused state and the direction of focusing are not detected, the clutch FC is turned off, so that the focus lens FL can be driven by the manual operation of the focus operation ring FR.
