PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine capable of minimizing the influence of deformation even if a tooth form of an inner tooth gear is deformed due to heat treatment to a cam surface of a rocking arm. SOLUTION: A lift amount variable mechanism is equipped with a slider 26 provided with an input gear and output gear 29a having helical splines with mutually different tilt angles, an input arm in which an internal tooth gear meshing with the input gear is formed and which is pushed by a rotating intake cam to rock around a supporting pipe 15, and a rocking arm 18 in which an internal tooth gear 30a meshing with the output gear 29a is formed and which rocks around the supporting pipe 15 on the basis of a rock of the input arm to lift the intake valve. A cam surface 25 for lifting the intake valve is formed in the rocking arm 18.The parts 43, 44 which are a part of a circumferential direction of the inner tooth gear 30a and output gear 29a meshing with each other and are in the vicinity of the cam surface 25 is made toothless.
