<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate state transition when the video data of different formats are continuously reproduced. <P>SOLUTION: When the format of a magnetic tape 28 is switched to an HD 2 format not compliant with double-speed reproduction during the double-speed reproduction of a DV format, the switching of the format is detected, a reproduction mode is switched to single-speed reproduction where the HD 2 format is apparently closest to double-speed reproduction based on the detection result, and a state is automatically changed from the double-speed reproduction mode to a single-speed reproduction mode. A double-speed reproduction mode designated by a user input is also switched to a single-speed reproduction mode in the case of reproducing the HD 2 format. When the HD 2 format is switched to the DV format again, the state is automatically changed to the original double-speed reproduction mode.
