PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a compact water heater of low initial cost, superior in supplied-hot water temperature characteristic and having a simple hot water supply function. SOLUTION: This water heater comprises a water quantity control valve 5 mounted at a downstream side of a heat exchanger 3 and having a closing function, a hot water temperature detector 6, a water bypass control valve 8 connecting an upstream side and the downstream side of the heat exchanger 3, a water quantity sensor 2 and a water temperature detector 1 mounted on the upstream side of the heat exchanger 3, an overpressure relief valve 7 mounted on an upstream side of the water temperature detector 1, a remote controller 31 and a control means 32. This water heater satisfies hot water supply temperature characteristic, and is constituted to relieve the rise of inner pressure with a simple structure, and further to close the valve after the standby for a constant time with water quantity less than fire extinction water quantity at the termination of hot water supply, thus the water heater improved in durability and having the closing function for easily and automatically supplying the hot water, can be realized.
