PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material which contains a metal complex inside silica and can be controlled into various shapes, and a simple manufacturing method of the composite material. SOLUTION: The composite material comprises a metal complex, which is comprised of a polymer (a) having a linear polyethyleneimine skeleton and at least one metal ion (b) coordinating thereto, and silica (c) covering the same. The manufacturing method of the composite material comprises the following steps: (1) a step for causing the polymers having the linear polyethyleneimine skeleton to associate in an aqueous medium; (2) a step for obtaining a composite of the associated polymer and silica by adding an alkoxysilane to the associated polymer in the presence of the aqueous medium; and (3) a step for causing the metal ion to coordinate to the linear polyethyleneimine skeleton in the polymer by impregnating the composite of the associated polymer and silica with a solution having dissolved the metal ion.
