PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a blast furnace, in which the depth of a molten iron tapping hole can further surely be stabilized while avoiding the excessive increase of the operating cost by restraining the consumption of mud without depending on the excessive trial and error, and the the service life of the furnace can be prolonged. SOLUTION: The depth L<SB>RW</SB>of a raceway 3 formed in the furnace inside of a tuyere 2 positioned at the upper part of the molten iron tapping hole 1, is adjusted so as to satisfy r<SB>TH</SB>/r<SB>RW</SB><0.95 to stabilize the depth L<SB>TH</SB>of the molten iron tapping hole, wherein r<SB>TH</SB>: distance from the center axis of the blast furnace to the tip end part in the furnace inside of the molten iron tapping hole, r<SB>RW</SB>: distance from the center axis of the blast furnace to the tip end part in the furnace inside of the raceway. The adjustment of L<SB>RW</SB>is performed with either one or both of operational actions of the operational action for increasing/decreasing fuel quantity blown into the furnace from the tuyere and the operational action for increasing/decreasing the blasting quantity in a blasting branched tube 4 connected with the tuyere.
