SEMICONDUCTOR OPTICAL ELEMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical element which has a structure which can be produced without using a dielectric mask and real refractive index guide.

SOLUTION: An active layer 5 is provided on a second semiconductor 3b in a first conductive semiconductor region 3. The active layer 5 has a pair of side faces 5a. A second conductive semiconductor area 7 is provided on the second region 3d of the first semiconductor 3a in the first conductive semiconductor region 3 on the side faces 3e of the second semiconductor 3b, on the active layer 5 and on the side faces 5a of the active layer 5. A second region 7d in the second conductive semiconductor area 7 constitutes pn junction with second region 3d of the first conductive semiconductor region 3 and the side faces 7e of the second semiconductor 3b. The active layer 5 is provided between a first region 3c in the first conductive semiconductor region 3 and a first region 7c in the second conductive semiconductor region 7.
