<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video tape reproducing device capable of accurately detecting the leader and terminal of a video tape without causing any malfunction even when being affected by external light. <P>SOLUTION: A microcomputer when powered on by a user (#1) makes a beginning sensor and an ending sensor detect their peripheral light (#2). At this time, when the beginning sensor detects the light (YES at #3), the microcomputer displays a message indicating that the side of the beginning sensor should be shielded from the light on a monitor device (#4). When the ending sensor detects the light (YES at #5), on the other hand, the microcomputer displays a message indicating that the side of the ending sensor should be shielded from the light on the monitor device (#6).
