PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for detecting and informing of dirt of an optical system with a simple method by utilizing the reading of a white reference board. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus provided with an imaging element 45 and the white reference board 42 for correcting read data includes: a detection means 1 that reads the white reference board 42 for a plurality of times and discriminates it to be dirt of the optical system when black pixels are consecutively detected at the same position in an output to the imaging element 45 in a main scanning direction for a prescribed number of times; and a notice means 11 for noticing of a warning when the dirt is discriminated.
