PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element exhibiting excellent reliability in which element characteristics do not deteriorate by blocking the migration of holes to an electron injection layer without employing a hole block layer such as BCP. SOLUTION: The organic EL element includes an organic EL layer at least having an organic light emitting layer and an electron transport layer touching the cathode side of the organic EL layer between an anode and a cathode wherein the ionization potential of the organic light emitting layer is different from that of the electron transport layer by 0.2 eV or more on the interface of the organic light emitting layer and the electron transport layer.
