The apparatus allows selective discrete communication in a room or space where third parties may be present and where the user cannot speak in private. The apparatus has a communication device (10) having a first acoustic output unit (18) which outputs a signal to possible thrid parties. The apparatus also has an acoustic input unit (17) and a second output unit (20) which outputs a signal only to desired persons. A switch unit (16) is provided to switch between the two output units. Independent claims also cover a method of selective verbal communication.
