<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to arbitrarily set a plurality of regular sizes when carrying out reading of a plurality of kinds of manuscripts having the same main scanning width and having different subscanning widths as the main scanning width in place of the subscanning width. <P>SOLUTION: When any one of three kinds of the manuscripts is inserted horizontally, whether there are a plurality of the subscanning widths or not is determined relating to the main scanning width (8.5 inches). If there are the plurality of the subscanning widths, determination is made that the subscanning widths are regarded to be the main scanning width, and the user sets any of the subscanning widths 11, 13, 14 inches as the regular size by a manuscript size setting means. If the set regular size is 11 inches, the manuscript is read. In the case other than 11 inches, the image is rotated 90° after reading. As a result, the selection of an appropriate paper sheet size is made possible as the regular size even in the case other than 11 inches. The paper sheet is selected according to the size of the manuscript of the 11 inches or 90° rotated manuscript image and is transferred and outputted.
