PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent water-based ink for ballpoint pens, generating little ink foams even when the ink in the tip of the pen point is stirred by rotation of the ball, especially in rapid writing, therefore, catching no ink foams from the ballpoint into the inside of the ballpoint and presenting no irregularities such as scratchy handwriting, faint and patchy handwriting and the like. SOLUTION: The water-based ink composition for ballpoint pens comprises at least water, a water soluble organic solvent and a polyhydric glycol having a structural formula expressed by the general formula.
