PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which light leakage due to damage on an alignment layer is prevented and with which excellent display characteristics are obtained in relation to the liquid crystal display device used for a display part or the like of an electronic appliance and provided with a vertical alignment type liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. SOLUTION: The MVA mode liquid crystal display device has a recessed part 26 on a position of a TFT substrate 2, opposite to a linear protrusion 18. Thereby, a cell gap of the position on which the linear protrusion 18 is formed is nearly equal to that in any other position. Consequently even a ball spacer 36 is arranged on the linear protrusion 18, compressional stress applied to the vertical alignment layers 14, 12 from the ball spacer 36 is relaxed in sticking both substrates 2, 4 to each other.
