PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for minimizing a required space, when mounting a sheet material medium detecting device by common use of a rotary central shaft, in a sheet-like medium detecting device having a shielding means rotatably arranged in a carrying passage and switching a signal shielding state of a transmissive detecting means by rotating in response to a carry of a sheet-like medium, and detecting the existence of the sheet-like medium. SOLUTION: This sheet-like medium detecting device has a carrying means for carrying the sheet-like medium, the transmissive detecting means having a pair of light emitting part and light receiving part, the carrying passage for carrying the sheet-like medium by the carrying means, a branch means 17 rotatably arranged in the carrying passage and switching the carrying direction of the sheet-like medium, and the shielding means 10 rotatably arranged in the carrying passage and switching the signal shielding state of the transmissive detecting means by rotating in response to the carry of the sheet-like medium; and detects the existence of the sheet-like medium.
