PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gateway unit for transferring data received from a remote device and requiring some processing to a nearby device of a destination user capable of executing required processing of data by proxy. SOLUTION: Instead of transmitting data received through a telephone line 11, or the like, to the device of a destination user using a destination solution table 30c registering all destination names having possibility of being specified as the destination of the receiving data and the host name on the LAN of a device being used by the destination user, and a name solution table 30d capable of automatically acquiring and registering an IP address and a subnet address on an LAN corresponding to the host name from a name server on the LAN, one gateway unit, i.e. a facsimile apparatus 100, selects a proxy device capable of processing the received data as a nearby device of the destination user among devices where the subnet address on the name solution table 30d is identical to that of the device of destination user and transfers the received data to the proxy device.
