PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To promptly and surely start an engine by setting a gradient of ignition timing advancing action based on fuel property. SOLUTION: The gradient or increment▵θper unit time is set based on engine temperature and fuel property. These engine temperature and fuel property represent burning rate at the time of engine starting. Until explosion completion from starting of engine operation (arrow X), ignition timingθis fixed at a constant valueθFX. When the explosion completion is judged (arrow Y), the ignition timing advancing action is taken for linearly advancing the ignition timingθat the gradient▵θ. When engine rotation speed NE then reaches target rotation speed NET, the ignition timing advancing action is stopped. The fuel property is judged according to ignition timingθSTP at this time.
