Fats which are free from active hydrogen are reacted with 1,2-alkylene oxides in the presence of fat-soluble oxyalkylation catalysts, e.g. alkali and alkaline earth metal alkoxides or fatty acid salts, or BF3. Suitable fats include beef tallow, lard, coconut fat and waxes, olive oil, cotton seed oil, peanut oil, palm kernel oil, soyabean oil, poppy seed oil, sunflower seed oil, fish oils, whale oil, bone oils and hydrogenated oils. The products are surfactants.
