PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift lever mechanism of simple construction capable of setting any operating position of a shift lever corresponding to the desired output condition of a continuously variable transmission device. SOLUTION: The shift lever mechanism is equipped with a detent device capable of setting the operating position of the shift lever corresponding to the desired output condition of the continuously variable transmission device and a locking/unlocking device capable of selecting two conditions operated externally, i.e. the locking condition to fix the detent device and the unlocking condition to enable the detent device to move. The detent device is moved in the operating direction of the shift lever by turning the lever while the detent device is unlocked by the locking/unlocking device, and setting of the operating position of the lever by the detent device is made by locking the detent device by the locking/unlocking device when the transmission device is put in the desired output condition.
