<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize signal-to-noise ratio (SN ratio) needed in X-ray film image reader over a wide range of density in an X-ray film image reader, controlling image quality deterioration caused by MTF deterioration. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus has a spatial filter that can output different characteristics or a plurality of spatial filters having a different characteristics, a means to calculate an average value of density in the vicinity of the elementary pixels, and a means to select the output of the spatial filter based on the calculated average value.
