PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize a converging state of a light beam on an information recording layer of an optical disk in each of a reproduction mode and a recording mode. SOLUTION: This optical disk apparatus is provided with a light source for producing the light beam, an objective lens 1, an focus actuator 2 for moving the objective lens 1 for an optical disk 20, a converging state detecting means 12 generating a focus error signal representing a converging state of the light beam on an information recording layer of the optical disk 20, and a focus control means 17 controlling operation of the actuator so that the focus position of the light beam matches its target focus position based on information indicating the target focus position of the light beam and the focus error signal. In this optical disk apparatus, the target focus position of the light beam is changed in accordance with switching between the reproduction mode and the recording mode. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
