A negative electrode material for nonaqueous secondary cells capable of realizing a nonaqueous secondary cell having a small charging/discharging irreversible capacity at the initial cycle and excellent in quick charging/discharging characteristic and cycle characteristic, and free of electrodeposition. The main component of the material is graphite particles. The median diameter of the graphite particles in the volume-basis particle size distribution measured by the laser diffraction/scattering particle size distribution measuring method is 5 to 40 µm. The tap density of the negative electrode material is 0.7 g/cm
