<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which realizes appropriate toner density control regardless of change such as a change in process linear velocity in the image forming apparatus and thereby prevents problems such as fogging or toner scattering. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is constituted in such a way that driving velocity of at least the supply means of an agitation section and that of the agitation means thereof can be switched in accordance with switching of the linear velocity of an image carrier and the image forming apparatus includes a means for applying control voltage corresponding to the linear velocity of the image carrier to a toner density detection means and performing control so that toner density falls within the prescribed range, wherein the image forming apparatus has a first adjustment mode for obtaining, at each prescribed time interval, control voltages which are to be applied to the toner density detection means and are corresponding to the respective linear velocities of the image carrier, and in addition to the first adjustment mode, has a second adjustment mode for obtaining the control voltages which are to be applied to the toner density detection means and are corresponding to the respective linear velocities of the image carrier when it is judged that adjustment is required since difference in the detection result of the toner density detection means between at a standard linear velocity and at a switched linear velocity becomes a prescribed value or over.
