PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine driven type air conditioner capable of determining whether the engine is in an overloaded state or not to properly avoid the overloaded state of the engine; and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: This engine driven type air conditioner is so structured that the rotational speed of the engine is variably controlled according to an air-conditioning load; a cooling medium discharged from an compressor driven by the engine is circulated to execute air-conditioning operation. The rotational speed of the engine, the opening of a fuel adjusting valve and the opening of a throttle are obtained (step S1); whether or not the engine 10 controlled according to an air-conditioning load is in an overloaded state is determined based on the obtained information (step S2); and, when the engine 10 is determined to be in the overloaded state, engine load reduction control (steps S3-S10) for reducing the load of the engine is executed.
