PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remarkably heighten contrast (transmittance) and resolution under electric field application by using an ER fluid in particular, in relation to a display device using the ER fluid, which is made to be usable as a display for a personal computer, a cellular phone and a mobile terminal. SOLUTION: The display device comprises an upper transparent electrode plate 3 composed of an upper side transparent plate 3a and an entire surface type transparent electrode 3b and a lower local electrode plate 4 composed of a transparent plate 4a and a local electrode 4b with an electrode on the periphery. The display device is constructed in such a way that the ER fluid A with a large number of insulating solid particles 1 dispersed in an insulating liquid 2 is watertightly sealed in a gap part 6a of spacers 6 between the local electrode plate 4 with a coating film 5 disposed on the lower face of the transparent plate 4a thereof and the transparent electrode plate 3, and a suitable voltage 7 is applied between the transparent electrode plate 3 and the local electrode plate 4.
