PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passenger conveyor capable of setting the most appropriate operation time even when changing the operation speed or when changing the set speed in the initial speed from the viewpoint of the improvement of carrying capacity or improvement of safety. SOLUTION: The passenger conveyor 1 is equipped with user detection means 11, 12 which are provided near the gateway and detect the approach of the users, a pulse signal generation means 13 generating the pulse signal every predetermined moving amount of a moving hand rail 9, and an operation control means 14. The operation control means 14 starts driving of a footstep 3 by the signal from the user detection means 11, 12, starts counting of the pulse signal from the pulse signal generation means 13, and stops driving of the footstep 3 after the moving amount of the moving hand rail 9 obtained by the counting of the pulse signal reaches the value of distance of the moving hand rail 9 from one side of the gateway to the other gateway.
