The system has several fuel cell blocks (18), in which chemical energy is convertible to electrical energy using an oxidizer. A mechanically operable power supply device (80) for supplying mechanical and electrical energy is required for startup and shut-down or operating the fuel cell blocks. The power supply device has a pump (82) and a compressor for delivering the oxidizer to the blocks. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a current generator with a fuel cell system; and (B) a method for startup and shut-down or for operation of a fuel cell system.
