PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for focus detection that properly detect a focus in various photographic environments. SOLUTION: The focus detecting device has: a focus-adjustable photographic lens forming a subject image; and a pixel array which receives a couple of pieces of luminous flux passing through the photographic lens and photoelectrically converts them. The pixel array is sectioned into a focus detection region for detecting a 1st defocusing quantity based upon the phase difference of the subject image, and a wavelength detection region where a filter having transmission wavelength characteristics different from mutually adjacent pixels is mounted. A correction value is calculated from a signal obtained in the wavelength detection region, and the 1st defocusing quantity calculated from a signal obtained in a focus detection region is corrected using the correction value.
