PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink-jet printer capable of preventing ink from being wastefully consumed, and a control method for the ink-jet printer. SOLUTION: The ink-jet printer 1 is provided with a flash ROM 46, which holds a flag indicating whether a cap is required or not, and a control part 41 which distinguishes staring-up processing based on power-on from that of based on a reset instruction. When it is in the starting-up processing by the power-on and the flag held by the flash ROM 46 indicates a state that a printhead is not capped, the control part 41 allows a pump to suck the ink.
