PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for allowing the feeling of the gloss of an image on a recording medium to agree approximately with visual evaluation, and thereby evaluating it with an objective numerical value. SOLUTION: In this evaluation method, evaluation is performed based on glossy clearness (C) calculated by formula (1): C=S/(W-R) (1) (C is the glossy clearness, S is a mapping property value, W is a full width glossiness, and R is a limit width glossiness). This device 10 has a mounting stand 1 for a recorded image sample 2 or a standard mirror plate; a light source 11 capable of irradiating the recorded image sample or the standard mirror plate on the mounting stand with light; a photodetector 21 capable of receiving reflected light from the recorded image sample or the standard mirror plate on the mounting stand; and a reflected light measuring auxiliary means 22 capable of providing a movable optical comb in front of the photodetector in a mapping property value measuring mode, providing a limit width slit in front of the photodetector in a limit width glossiness measuring mode, and removing the limit width slit from the front of the photodetector in a full width glossiness measuring mode.
