PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of outputting image information of a face intended by a user, without rereading an original, even if the user makes a mistake in a setting direction of the front/rear face of the original, when using the original printed on the rear side of a paper. SOLUTION: The image reader includes a first reading means and a second reading means for reading first face and second face image information that serve as the front and rear of the fed original, respectively; a storing means for storing the read image information; a reading mode selecting means for optionally setting a single-faced reading mode, intended to read only the first face and a double-faced reading mode, intended to read both faces of the first and second faces; and a control part for controlling the first reading means, the second reading means, the storing means and the reading mode selecting means. When the single-face reading mode is set, the control part causes the first and second reading means to read the image information on the first and second faces of the original, respectively, and to make the first face output the image information of and causes a storage part to store at least the image information of the second face.
