PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake device of brake-by-wire system capable of preventing a stroke simulator from providing an unnecessary function when abnormality occurs by a simple structure. SOLUTION: At normal time, stepping force shutting-off valves 17a, 17b are closed and atmosphere shutting-off valves 38a, 38b are opened to operate wheel cylinders 16a, 16b by brake liquid pressure generated by brake cylinders 18a, 18b driven by motors 20a, 20b. At this time, reaction force is generated in operation of a brake pedal 12 by the stroke simulators 31a, 31b communicating with a master cylinder 10. When abnormality occurs, the stepping force shutting-off valves 17a, 17b are opened and the atmosphere shutting-off valves 38a, 38b are closed to operate the wheel cylinders 16a, 16b by brake liquid pressure generated by the master cylinder 10. At this time, since the stroke simulators 31a, 31b do not function because communication with a reservoir 25 is shut off by the closed atmosphere shutting-off valves 38a, 38b, occurrence of a sense of incongruity in brake operation is prevented.
