RAMAN AMPLIFIER AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A Raman amplifier for amplifying a carrier light by use of Raman amplifying medium, comprising an excitation light source (3) for supplying an excitation light, which has been intensity modulated by a high frequency equal to or greater than 100 MHz, to the Raman amplifying medium; and a WDM multiplexer (5) for multiplexing and guiding the carrier light and the excitation light to the Raman amplifying medium; wherein the Raman amplifying medium has a low dispersion characteristic and exhibits a small difference in passage/propagation time between the carrier light and the excitation light, so that an intensity modulation at a high frequency equal to or greater than 100 MHz can be realized.
