Xylylene diamine (XDA) production by continuous liquid phthalodinitrile (PDN) hydrogenation on a heterogeneous catalyst in presence of liquid ammonia with part of product continuously recycled as a liquid stream to the reactor inlet involves mixing PDN melt stream with recycled stream around reactor so that (a) PDN conversion after 1 pass is > 99%; and (b) the recycle stream comprises > 93 wt.% of liquid NH 3and XDA and no further PDN solvent.
