The invention relates to a method for the sulphonation of aromatic polymers, in particular polyarylene sulphides and polyarylene ether ketones by reaction with a sulphonating agent and a halogenated hydrocarbon. The invention further relates to polyelectrolytes produced by the above method and the use thereof as cationic exchange materials in the form of moulded bodies, films or fibres.
