A web-compatible electronic device acquires a web page containing a headline, its text, a subhead, and a link to an article belonging to the subhead as display elements, plots it inside, and calculates the position of each display element according to the plot data. According to the position of the display element calculated, the display elements are classified into some clusters. A layout feature of each cluster is detected and according to the feature detection result, each cluster of the headline/text is judged. Next, the clusters of the headline/text having the same character attribute are grouped. The group having a high average value of the number of characters in the cluster contained in each group is decided to be a text and the group having a low average value is decided to be a headline. A page of text/article is created and a top page containing the headline and subhead where link to the text/article is arranged is created. Thus, the web page acquired via the network is re-built into a web page appropriate for reading in a low-resolution display environment and is displayed.
