The system has a high data rate digital subscriber line (HDSL) modem (64) comprising an output interface (82) with a HDSL module (86) adapted to code and/or decode information transmitted on a stranded telephone wire (84) by using HDSL coding and/or decoding. The interface is directly connected to an end of the wire, where another end of the wire is connected to an input of a HDSL repeater (87).
