A catalyst composition comprises the products of reducing partly coprecipitated oxides of copper and zinc and at least one further metal selected from manganese and the metals of groups II to V whose oxides are differently reducible. The composition is partly reduced to produce a catalyst for use in the carbon monoxide steam reaction. The further metal may be aluminium or magnesium, also mentioned are titanium, zirconium, thiourea. Preferred atomic proportions are:- copper at least 10%, for example 10% to 70%; zinc at least 20% for example 20% to 800/0; manganese or other metal 4% to 20%. The catalyst may also contain catalyst support material for example alumina not introduced by coprecipitation. |
