The method involves detecting temperature variation of exhaust gas in a combustion chamber (10), and/or pressure variation of the gas, after an ignition time. The variations with respect to a normal value are processed. Unburnt gas mixture is passed into a return duct (6) between seizure point in an exhaust gas duct (1) and catalyst (3) in downstream, if the presence of the mixture is observed. An independent claim is also included for a device to recognize false start and reintroduce unburnt exhaust gas in an internal combustion engine.
