PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an image display apparatus with which various problems by a conventional manufacturing method can be solved by forming barrier walls on a substrate by a wet blast method. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing an image display apparatus aims to manufacture an image display apparatus equipped with an image display panel having one or more kinds of image display media sealed between two opposing substrates 1, 2 at least one of which is transparent and displaying an image by moving the image display media by an electric field produced in the substrates. In this method, the surface of the substrate 1 is ground by a wet blast method to form spaces to house barrier walls 14 and the image display media on the substrate so as to realize such a structure that the barrier walls 14 are integrally formed on the surface of the substrate 1, the upper face of the barrier walls 14 and the sealant coating part 15 are located on the same planar surface and the height of the sealant coating part 15 can be significantly decreased compared to conventional techniques.
