Flame retardants are described, comprising (A) at least one metal or metalloid salt of a phosphonic acid of formula (I) wherein R is hydrogen, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>5</SUB>-C<SUB>6</SUB>cycloalkyl, C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>6</SUB>alkenyl, C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>aryl or C<SUB>7</SUB>-C<SUB>11</SUB>aralkyl and R' is hydrogen, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>8</SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>aryl or C<SUB>7</SUB>-C<SUB>11</SUB>aralkyl, the substituents R and R' that are other than hydrogen being unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, amino, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>4</SUB>alkylamino, di-C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>4</SUB>alkoxy, carboxy or C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>5</SUB>alkoxycarbonyl; and the metal or metalloid is one from Group IA, IB, IIA, IIB, IA, IVA, VA or VII of the Periodic Table; and (B) at least one flame retardant component based on a nitrogen compound, and also the use thereof in synthetic polymers. |
