PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately control the stop position of engine revolution. SOLUTION: Revolving energy for every TDC is calculated in an engine revolution stopping process to calculate a revolving energy variation (energy consumption) between the TDC, and a relationship between the energy consumption and an engine speed is used to estimate engine revolution stopping behavior. At a timing determined in accordance with the estimated engine revolution stopping behavior, stop position control (alternator load control, e.g.) is executed to force engine revolution to be stopped at a target stop position. Thus, with no influences of a dispersion of a revolving energy consuming speed due to the manufacturing tolerance of an engine, a secular change and an engine friction change, the stop position control is executed at a consistently proper timing, therefore permitting accurate control of the stop position of the engine revolution, finding accurate information for the stop position of the engine revolution and improving startability and starting exhaust emission.
