<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which has a slim design and improved illumination efficiency, and is capable of suppressing the cost and eliminating ghosts. <P>SOLUTION: The image display apparatus is provided with a light source; a condensing mirror condensing light emitted from the light source and making a virtual secondary light; a color filter creating three primary colors of light from white light emitted from the condensing mirror with time; a light tunnel, on which the light passing through the color filter is made incident; a relay lens through which the light exiting the light tunnel passes; a mirror on which the light passing through the relay lens is made incident directly or indirectly; a reflective display element, including a plurality of micromirrors arranged on a substrate in a matrix, on which the light reflected by the mirror, is made incident, wherein each micromirror is turned on or off, by individually changing the slope of the micromirror thus angles of reflective light; and a projection lens enlarging and projecting light, reflected from the micromirrors in the on-state.
