PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for calculating the significance of a sentence within a document. SOLUTION: The summarization system calculates the significance of sentences of the document and selects the most significant sentences as the summary of the document. The summarization system calculates the significance of a sentence on the basis of "important" words of the document which are included within the sentence. The summarization system calculates the importance of words of the document by using various scoring techniques and then combines the scores to classify a word as an important or not important word. The summarization system can then be used to identify significant sentences of the document on the basis of the important words included in sentences and to select significant sentences as a summary of the document.
